Back in 2015 BMW unveiled a function called gesture control for the then-new 7 Series. You could spin your finger to adjust the volume, flick left or right to change a song, and other features best served by a button. The Bavarian automaker has apparently realized this, as it's just announced at CES it's killing gesture control. It's actually a little more nuanced than that, as BMW Blog reports. The company feels that its new voice control system has advanced considerably due to the integration of artificial intelligence, which makes gestures unnecessary. Likewise, it admits that not many people used the gesture control feature in the first place.  That seems logical given its inherent qualities. The gesture control capability is nearly undetectable unless you're aware of its existence, and even then, its utility is quite limited. BMW is dropping the feature now because it just introduced entirely new software and hardware for its upcoming Neue Klasse line of vehicles. Featuring both electric and internal-combustion drivetrains, the Neue Klasse cars are a departure from BMW's existing lineup, featuring new underpinnings, updated exterior styling, and, you guessed it, more sophisticated interior tech. This technology features a pillar-to-pillar heads-up display and minimal physical buttons. The steering wheel has also transitioned entirely to capacitive touch controls. The LG Vision AI Mobility Concept here at CES 2025 uses a combination of sensors, cameras and AI to not only keep tabs on your health and stress, it gives you a driving report, complete with a score. Tune In As I entered the cockpit of this futuristic vehicle, it was clear that I was in for a cutting-edge experience. With the ability to select my route through eye tracking, I opted for the scenic path featuring beautiful mountains and the ocean in the distance. Additionally, the LG Vision AI Mobility Concept monitors your stress levels in real-time (which can be quite stressful, right?), and it analyzes your posture, indicating whether you're distracted by creating a 3D skeleton model. It might come off as a bit unsettling, but it certainly has the ability to recognize if your attention is elsewhere. What about your mood? I saw a small face in the center of the screen with the word Neutral written underneath it. I was curious about how to improve it, and I learned that if I smiled, it would change to happy. Among all the Acura models, the Acura Legend Coupe has always held a special place in my heart. I recall my family owning one during my childhood, and I distinctly remember being impressed by its build quality, which I felt rivaled that of the BMW 633CSi we also had back then. Now on AutoHunter, the auction platform powered by ClassicCars.com, is this 1991 Acura Legend L.  The Legend represented the pinnacle of Acura's offerings. Under the channel's misleading video, the expanded description states that the content has been imaged with AI, using phrases further down like "digitally generated" and "synthetic" content. Always check the description of a video if you feel the images are suspicious or too good to be true, like the rumored Ford Mustang pickup.  The images themselves also give away that AI was implemented in their creation. In one image, you can spot it right away due to the lettering. First, Chevrolet was spelled wrong on the dealership building, and it also isn't the correct font. Other AI images, like this one of the fake return of the Ford Crown Victoria, has gibberish on the license plate. Another common feature of an AI image is the incorrect details on the car, like odd shapes, incorrect feature placements, and important missing details. In the image above, the Corvette logo is on the back of the truck twice, and there are plenty of odd bends and empty spaces lacking detail. The third giveaway is the overly shiny appearance, including a very glossy car and over-polished floors full of reflections.

Volvo Achieves Highest 5-Star Safety Ratings While Stellantis Leads NHTSA Complaints in the Past Decade

Jeep owners have reported more than 1,487 complaints for each vehicle, significantly surpassing all other brands by a remarkable difference. Several automakers haven’t launched a single new model in ten years without 5-star ratings. Genesis, Polestar, Buick, and Acura also performed strongly with consistently high safety scores. Volvo and Genesis reported the fewest customer complaints among all major automotive brands. A recent study highlights the car brands that have excelled in safety ratings in the U.S. over the past ten years, providing insights into which manufacturers place a strong emphasis on ensuring their vehicles meet high safety standards—or at the very least, are capable of passing standardized evaluations. Although the outcomes appear promising, it's important to consider: how much credence should we place on these 5-star ratings regarding their performance in real-life situations? Remember, these ratings stem from controlled evaluations in optimal circumstances, not from actual crash data from real-world incidents. The study, put together by Confused, analyzed data from the New Car Assessment Program (NCAP), which rates a vehicle’s safety based on crash test performance, rollover resistance, and the effectiveness of advanced driver assistance systems (ADAS). It identifies Volvo, Subaru, Tesla, Genesis, and Polestar as the (percentage) champions of safety tests. Every single new model released by these brands in the past decade has received a 5-star rating. That’s undeniably impressive on paper, but the reality is more complicated. To begin with, these assessments focus on particular crash situations, so achieving a top rating doesn't always ensure equivalent safety during a chaotic highway accident or on a dimly lit country road. Moreover, the quantity of models assessed is crucial—there's a notable distinction between testing three vehicles and evaluating more than 100 from one manufacturer. Volvo and Subaru: Pioneers in Automotive Innovation Leading the pack is Volvo, with 76 models achieving 5-star NCAP ratings in the past decade. Subaru comes in close behind with 72, followed by Tesla with 45. Positioned alongside these brands are Genesis and Polestar. Both of these companies are newer entrants to the market and, therefore, haven’t released as many cars. Nevertheless, each of them to be launched has received top safety marks. Other top performers in the study (especially if you take into account the number of cars versus Polestar and Genesis), include Buick, with 98.31% of its cars getting 5-star ratings, followed by Acura with 98.18%, Honda with 94.59%, Mazda at 92.73%, and BMW at 91.30%. On the other hand, four brands, namely Mini, Fiat, Smart and Suzuki, failed to deliver a single 5-star-rated vehicle during the same period. Top Car Brands with the Highest Number of 5-Star Ratings The study also reveals several intriguing trends within the industry. Notably, vehicles manufactured in 2024 boast the highest percentage of 5-star safety ratings ever recorded. This improvement follows a minor decline in average safety ratings observed in 2022, which is believed to have resulted from automakers resorting to inferior components and microchips due to widespread shortages in the sector. How Should We Handle Customer Complaints? Nonetheless, safety ratings provide just a portion of the overall picture. Complaints submitted by customers to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) give a more realistic view of how these vehicles operate in real-world situations. Volvo and Genesis excel here too, with the fewest complaints per car with an average of 47.20 complaints made to the NHTSA per car launched. Other top performers included Polestar, Lexus, Audi, Mitsubishi, Smart, Lincoln, Cadillac, and Acura. At the other end of the spectrum, Jeep owners filed an astronomical 1,487.83 complaints per car, making it the worst brand in this metric by a significant margin. Dodge, Chrysler, and Ram also fared poorly, with hundreds of complaints per car. Customer complaint data adds nuance to the conversation about safety. While a high safety rating is important, a car with persistent technical issues, build quality problems, or ineffective ADAS systems can still create dangerous situations on the road. Reflective Apparel May Render Individuals Undetectable to Pedestrian Detection Technologies: IIHS

Donning a "high-visibility" jacket during nighttime could potentially mislead the sensors employed by automated driving assistance technologies. View pictures in App save up to 80% data. IIHS Study The reflective, “high-visibility” safety vests worn by road workers and first responders, not to mention joggers and dog walkers, may do absolutely nothing to protect their wearers from automated driving systems, the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety said in a report released this week. These systems are already known to struggle in low light, and now IIHS says that the reflective strips on these vests, which are vital for nighttime visibility, seem to be virtually invisible to at least some automated safety systems. And that’s a problem, because most pedestrian fatalities happen at night. IIHS tested the performance of three different driver aid suites: Honda, using a CR-V; Mazda, using a CX-5; and Subaru, using a Forester. The Institute mocked up a crosswalk and outfitted a dummy in four different outfits: two with reflectors (one made of reflective material, the other fitted with patches), and the other two unadorned—one white and one black. The dummies were then sent into the crosswalk at three levels of outside illumination (dark, twilight, and 20 lux—the requirement for lighting crosswalks) to see whether the onboard pedestrian safety systems would detect them at 25 mph. While the results varied from test to test, the Honda CR-V and Mazda CX-5 starkly demonstrated the potential severity of these systems’ limitations. View pictures in App save up to 80% data. In the tests conducted without reflectors, the black dummy unsurprisingly performed the poorest. When using only their low beams, both the Honda and Mazda faced difficulties; the Mazda reduced its speed by approximately one-third, whereas the Honda collided with the dummy without decelerating. However, when the high beams were activated, both cars were able to detect the dummy and significantly reduced their speed. When the lighting was increased to the legal standard for pedestrian crossings (20 lux), the performance of both the Honda and Mazda improved notably, according to IIHS. The white dummy also remained unseen by the Honda in the absence of extra external lighting, but its visibility greatly enhanced with 10 lux (twilight) or 20 lux of light. The CX-5 showed improved performance when the dummy was clad in white. However, once reflectors were involved, the situation took a turn for the worse. According to the IIHS, “The CR-V maintained its speed throughout all trials when the dummy was outfitted in the reflective jacket, showing no signs of slowing down, even with extra roadway lighting present. On the other hand, the CX-5 exhibited a significant reduction in speed when there was no roadway lighting and only 10 lux of additional light, compared to when the dummy was dressed in black. However, when the illumination increased to 20 lux, the CX-5's performance deteriorated with the dummy in the reflective jacket compared to when it was wearing the black attire.” View pictures in App save up to 80% data. By now, you might be curious about what transpired with the Forester. The reason for this intrigue is that the Subaru was occupied with excelling in nearly all of its evaluations. According to the IIHS summary, the CR-V and CX-5 struck the dummy in 84% and 88% of their test runs, respectively, whereas the Forester successfully avoided a collision in all but one trial. It was also noted that neither the CR-V nor the CX-5 reduced speed when the dummy was dressed in clothing with reflective strips that highlighted its limbs. “The summary went on to state, “Unlike the other two vehicles, the Subaru managed to stop completely without colliding with the pedestrian dummy in all but one instance. That exception occurred when the dummy was dressed in reflective clothing and the road was lit to a brightness of 10 lux. Nonetheless, it still reduced its speed by over 80% during that test.” Even Subaru's Eyesight system, which typically performs well, can occasionally struggle with reflective surfaces. Why is this the case? According to IIHS President David Harkey, it creates a "concerning blind spot." The IIHS stated, "The reason behind the difficulties faced by the Honda and Mazda systems with the reflective strips remains uncertain, as does the number of other systems that may encounter challenges in detecting pedestrians dressed in this kind of apparel." Revisiting My Beloved Tracks with Cadillac and Dolby Atmos

I enjoyed listening to some of my favorite tracks in the stylish Cadillac Optiq, an impressive electric SUV, to explore how Dolby Atmos audio enhances and transforms the listening experience. Today, we're exploring the all-new Cadillac Optic, a compact luxury SUV that's part of Cadillac's electric vehicle lineup. We're diving into the immersive experience of Dolby Atmos Audio, featuring a 19-speaker AKG audio system. Although I can't play any tracks due to copyright restrictions, I just had the chance to listen to "Take On Me" by Aha, one of my all-time favorite 80s hits. Right away, I noticed an incredibly expansive audio stage. Different elements of the music seem to emanate from various spots within the vehicle, creating a sensation of being enveloped by the band. This is thanks to the multitude of speakers strategically placed throughout the car, including some in the ceiling and four subwoofers in the doors, along with an additional powered subwoofer in the rear. The sound truly surrounds you, and that's due to the song being re-encoded in Dolby audio, allowing for distinct highs and lows to come from different sources, resulting in enhanced clarity when all the sounds blend together. Next, I listened to "Brown Sugar" by D'Angelo, another personal favorite from my high school days. An intriguing aspect of this track is that D'Angelo recorded all the audio layers himself. With Dolby Audio, the background vocals come from behind me, while the lead vocals are right in front, replicating the feel of an intimate concert experience. The bass hits low, creating a vibration that resonates through my legs, which I believe aligns with D'Angelo's vision of a collaborative sound rather than a studio layering effect. What’s particularly exciting about the Cadillac Optic is that Dolby Atmos comes standard across all models, enhancing the listening experience for every driver. At first, his truck sputtered, lurched unexpectedly, and came to a sudden halt while he was driving at 45 miles per hour on the highway.  Experiencing a sudden loss of power in his vehicle was already a frustrating ordeal for Bryan, but it turned out to be just the beginning of a series of challenges he would face. When Bryan's Cybertruck unexpectedly came to a halt in the fast lane, he attempted to maneuver it to the roadside. Unfortunately, this only aggravated the situation, leaving his Cybertruck immobilized and possibly trapping him in the middle of the highway. Luckily, Brayn managed to free himself from the truck by utilizing the manual door release for the Cybertruck. With the Cybertruck completely drained of power, the hazard lights extinguished as well. Bryan was navigating the road at night, making it difficult for approaching drivers to notice his Cybertruck stranded in the roadway. Bryan recounts a terrifying experience where, without the hazard lights on, he watched in disbelief as vehicle after vehicle nearly collided with the back of his Cybertruck. Ultimately, Bryan came across a few traffic cones and attached a flashlight to them, alerting approaching vehicles about his disabled Cybertruck. Luckily, even though the circumstances were dire, Bryan's Cybertruck remained unscathed and was not hit from behind by another car while it was stuck in the road. Having encountered this problem personally, Bryan recommends that all Cybertruck owners keep a flashlight or flares handy, just in case they face a similar predicament. Bryan shared his ordeal in the Cybertruck Owners Club forum. This is what he composed… "It could be beneficial and potentially life-saving...keep reading. Just two days ago, my truck notified me that it needed servicing (error code UI_a006). Unfortunately, the code didn’t give me much detail, and all I could do was book a service appointment, which is scheduled for two weeks from now." I kept driving the truck, and about 18 miles down the road, suddenly, the pyro fuse for the rear inverter exploded, causing the truck to lurch violently. It came to an abrupt halt and refused to budge. This situation was incredibly perilous, as I found myself in the fast lane of a 45-mph road at 5:30 a.m., when it was still dark outside. After attempting to get the truck to react, it unexpectedly shut down completely, leaving it unresponsive and even turning off the hazard lights. I had to exit using the manual door handle override, make my way to the side of the road, and witness vehicle after vehicle nearly collide with the stationary truck. I gathered a few traffic cones, placed a flashlight on top of them, and kept my fingers crossed to avert any mishaps. After a wait of 25 minutes, the tow truck finally showed up. We quickly pulled the vehicle out of the traffic lane and headed off to the service center. Certainly, the service center mentioned that this issue has become quite prevalent among these Cybertrucks, and they assured me that it will be resolved in just a few days. We'll wait and see… If you own a dual-motor Cybertruck and haven't encountered this situation yet, it's wise to keep flashlights, flares, or other emergency items on hand for nighttime incidents. I found this situation challenging, as I couldn't utilize the front motor for low-speed driving, which many have reported. Beneath his post, Bryan shared a series of images. The initial two depict his Cybertruck being loaded onto a tow truck during the night, right in the middle of the street.  In the third image, an error message appears on his display, prompting him to arrange a service appointment. The last image depicts his central touch screen blinking red, signaling him to safely pull over due to the detection of a serious problem. A Cybertruck stranded in the middle of the road at night, without any hazard lights flashing, creates a truly unsettling scenario. Sadly, judging by the comments, it seems that Bryan isn't the only one facing this predicament. Multiple Cybertruck owners chimed in, sharing that they have encountered the same issue. He noted that the dealership will need to change ownership before finalizing and renovating the new site. As a precautionary measure, the lease has been extended until 2030. This new lease recognizes a change in ownership, and as a result, the monthly rent has been raised due to the extension. It has also been established that in the event Harley Davidson falls behind on payments, the County is prohibited from confiscating the dealership's inventory. The commissioners unanimously approved the agreement and the lease modification with a vote of 3 to 0.
