Plans for new Airbus skills centre near Bristol move forward

Weston College has signed a Heads of Terms for a new manufacturing, tech and skills centre with Airbus

Plans for a new technology and skills hub at Airbus's site in Filton, South Gloucestershire, have taken a step forward. The aerospace giant has signed a so-called 'heads of terms' agreement with Weston College.

The two organisations are proposing to open a 'Manufacturing, Technology and Skills Centre' which will offer a range of courses and apprenticeships that have been designed in consultation with industry experts. The aim is to bolster aerospace and defence skills across the region.

The centre, which will have state-of-the-art facilities, will serve as a focal point for education, training and skills development, leveraging the expertise of Weston College and Airbus, along with other major West Country employers. Work will be starting on site this month, with the first intake of students expected the following academic year.

Alex Warner, deputy principal of Weston College, said: "This partnership with Airbus represents a transformative opportunity for our students and the wider community. The Manufacturing, Technology and Skills Centre will not only enhance the skill set of our current workforce but also inspire the next generation of engineers, technicians, and innovators. We are proud to be at the forefront of this exciting venture with Airbus."

Simon Galpin, head of the Airbus Filton site, said supporting the growth of the UK’s aerospace and manufacturing industry was a "key priority".
